Solar Panels in Dundee: Costs, Yields and East Scotland Solar

Does solar work in Dundee?
Yes — and the east coast position gives Dundee a modest yield advantage over Scottish cities on the west. Dundee faces the North Sea and the Tay estuary, with relatively open skies and fewer of the rain shadow effects that affect Glasgow and the west Highlands.
Annual irradiance in Tayside runs at around 900–950 kWh/m², giving a typical panel yield of 800–850 kWh per kWp per year. A 4 kWp south-facing system in Dundee generates roughly 3,200–3,400 kWh per year.
Scotland's longer summer days partially compensate for lower winter irradiance: in June, Dundee sees over 17 hours of daylight, meaning panels generate across a much longer daily window than in the south of England, even if each hour is less intense.

Scotland has the highest average installed solar costs in the UK. Regional data for April 2026 puts the average at approximately £1,734 per kWp — compared with £1,591 per kWp for England as a whole. A typical 4 kWp system in Dundee costs in the range of £6,500–£7,500 before any loan support.
The Home Energy Scotland interest-free loan (see below) can meaningfully offset the financial impact of that higher upfront cost.
Your electricity network: SPEN
Dundee is served by SPEN — SP Energy Networks (spenergynetworks.co.uk), which covers central and south-west Scotland. SPEN handles all grid connection notifications for Dundee and the wider Tayside area.
For systems up to 3.68 kW per phase, your installer submits a G98 Fit and Inform notification. Larger systems require G99 pre-approval before installation. SPEN's registration process mirrors the GB framework; your installer handles this as standard.
Typical system for Dundee homes
Dundee's housing stock ranges from Victorian stone-built terraces in areas like the Hilltown and Lochee to post-war housing schemes in Whitfield, Fintry, and Ardler, and newer waterfront and city centre developments as part of the ongoing waterfront regeneration.
Stone-built terraced properties typically accommodate 3–4 kWp on the rear slope (6–8 panels). Post-war housing scheme properties often have simpler pitched roofs with good south-facing aspects and can suit 4–5 kWp. Newer developments along the waterfront may include solar as standard.
Unlike in England, Scotland's Class 4A permitted development rights include flatted buildings — so Dundee flat-dwellers have more options to explore than equivalent residents in English cities.
Dundee's waterfront regeneration: new builds often include solar
Many of the newer residential developments along Dundee's waterfront include solar panels as part of their design. If you are buying in a new waterfront development, check the property's EPC and specification — you may already have solar, or it may be included as a buyer option.
Local grants and schemes
Solar grants from Home Energy Scotland stopped in June 2024
HES solar grants are no longer available. Do not rely on older articles or advice that references a grant — it does not exist. An interest-free loan is still available.
- Home Energy Scotland interest-free loan — up to £6,000 for solar installation. Visit hes.scot or call 0808 808 2282. Confirm the current loan ceiling before relying on this figure.
- Warmer Homes Scotland — for low-income and fuel-poor households; solar is eligible but heating and insulation typically take priority.
- 0% VAT on solar — UK-wide until March 2027.
Building regulations in Scotland
Part P does not apply. Scotland uses the Building (Scotland) Act 2003. The relevant standards for solar electrical work are Standards 4.5 and 4.6. The relevant certification body is SELECT (the Scottish Electrical Contractors Association). Always confirm your installer is SELECT-registered for the electrical element of the work.
Solar installers in Dundee
Dundee is served by a range of MCS-certified installers covering Tayside and the wider east of Scotland. Spirit Energy operates across Scotland, including the Dundee and Tayside area, and is familiar with the east coast's housing mix. British Gas Solar covers Scotland nationally and can be worth including for comparison. Confirm any installer you engage is SELECT-registered for the electrical work and has experience with SPEN's network registration process.
When choosing an installer, check their MCS certification status, request a site survey before accepting a quote, and get at least three quotes to compare.
For a full comparison of national and regional installers, see our installer directory. You can also search the MCS installer finder for certified companies near you.
